Pensioners learn the benefits of being web wise

PENSIONERS were shown how technology can enhance their lives when they were given a crash course on using computers and the web.

Residents at Torkington House care home in Creswick Road, Acton, checked out holiday destinations on Google Earth, used YouTube to track down their favourite songs and made calls with Skype, delighting one novice who was able to chat to loved ones in Canada.

The 15 participants were also given training to use gadgets, including a iPad, iPhone, digital cameras and a camcorder, on Thursday (22).

Residents have already been set up with email accounts after SimplyUnite, a company which works to improve access to technology in care homes, visited in January.

They came back as part of Age UK's iTea and biscuits project and residents now have access to use everything they have been taught to use.

Torkington House's manager Margaret Siriwardena, said: "They didn't realise how much you can do with technology, they were amazed.

"They all said they were going to use it often. It just proves that technology isn't just for the younger generation."

We'd like to hear from you.
