Lord Soley visits Acton school

Students were given a taste of political life as they welcomed a member of the House of Lords to their school last Friday morning.

Twyford Church of England High School in Twyford Crescent, Acton, hosted a talk given by Lord Soley encouraging pupils to engage more with the political and parliamentary processes.

The former MP met sixth form history, politics and law students and discussed the work of the House of Lords before engaging in a question and answer session during his hour visit.

Pupils piped up sparking debates about the Iraq War, Heathrow expansion, health care and international relations.

Mike Bowen, Twyford's politics teacher, said: "This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to interact with someone who knows the parliamentary system inside out, as it can sometimes seem far removed from their daily lives."

"Lord Soley is a keen blogger and commentator on the current legislation going through the House of Lords and was only too pleased to accept Twyford's invitation to give a talk."

The visit was part of the Lord Speaker's 'Peers in Schools' programme, which has been running across the UK since 2007 and engaged around 15,000 young people.

Members of the House of Lords are sent to schools and colleges to give talks as part of a citizen curriculum.
