Acton parking permit blunder

Drivers claim they have been 'duped' by the Council after receiving letters incorrectly requesting nearly double the amount for a parking permit.

Following the transfer of around half a dozen roads from Zone K to K1 in the Poets Corner area of Acton, householders in three roads were mistakenly charged £45 for a parking renewal permit which should have only cost £25.

The mistake was due to a computer database error and, one driver discovered the excess renewal cost, said not only have they been charged the higher amount since 2008 but getting to the bottom of the problem has been a real task.

Jane Bryant, a health advocate of Maldon Road, said: "In a letter sent out to residents, the charge was £45 but when I checked on-line it was only £25.

"It's quite lucky I checked as we would have continued to pay double the amount but for some elderly people who don't use the internet, this is really quite naughty.

"It's a disgrace and we wonder how much it will cost to sort out this high level of incompetence?"

A council spokeswoman said: "Some roads which used to be in zone K were transferred into zone K1, but because of an error in the computer database some households were charged the permit cost for their old zone.

"We are sorry for the error and are now in the process of identifying those motorists who have been overcharged and will be refunding them as quickly as possible."
