Dispersal zone for Acton drinkers

Posted by Dan Hodges on Nov 11, 08 05:43 PM in Crime

Police are planning to impose a dispersal zone on Acton town centre before Christmas to address problems with street drinkers.

Market traders in The Mount have been threatened by drunks who congregate outside St Mary's Church, and residents are demanding action amid claims their gardens are being used as toilets.

Inspector Martin Barry told residents at an emergency meeting at St Mary's Church Hall yesterday (10) that a dispersal zone should be in place within four to six weeks. It will give officers the power to arrest drinkers who refuse to move on when asked.

Police will also look into stepping up undercover operations to target off licences and pubs selling alcohol to people who are already drunk.
